Install Copy, an alternative to Ubuntu One

by -

Ubuntu One cloud sync service was shut down earlier this month. Many users have moved to alternative cloud sync services such as Dropbox, Google Drive , etc. If you are not happy with the regular cloud storages or  just want to increase your existing storage capacity you can take a look at Copy. Copy, unlike Ubuntu One, is much more secure as it uses AES256 for encryption. According to the website

For increased security, your data is protected by multiple layers of encryption, including top-secret grade AES 256, both during transfer and while at rest on Barracuda’s enterprise-class cloud storage. And with advanced features like secure sharing, source validation, and identity verification, you can breathe easy knowing your content can only be seen by the people you want.

If you are new to this cloud sync service, you will need to sign up. You can do so here.

Unlike Google Drive and may other Windows and Mac friendly tools, Copy treats Linux well. Copy provides a native Linux UI to sync folders to its cloud storage. You can install the copy agent by adding the ppa.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:paolorotolo/copy
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install copy

If you don’t want to install an untrusted ppa, download the debs here :  32bit|64bit. If you are using any other Linux distribution apart from Ubuntu, you can download the .tar.gz file from the website.

Installing indicators for Ubuntu Unity

The agent’s default indicator does not work at all with Ubuntu 13.10/14.04. Various blogs have been written on how to fix this problem. I am summarising them into one.

For Copy agent installed from PPA or from .deb files

cd /tmp
tar -xvf libdbusmenu-gtk* sudo
cp /tmp/libdbusmenu-gtk*/* /opt/copy-client/

Copy agent installed from .tar.gz files

For agents installed from the .tar.gz file, you will need to find the install folder in your disk. After that download the  libdbusmenu-gtk.tar.gz file from here . Remember to select the correct architecture. Once done, extract the content of the folder into the Copy agent folder which has the CopyAgent executable file.

Copy provides its own icons for the indicator panel. If you are using Numix circle theme, you will have the Numix customised icons. If, however, you want a monochrome icon, you will need to follow the steps below to install them.

cd /tmp wget
tar -xvf copy-icons.tar.gz
sudo cp copy-icons/copyagent.svg /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/
sudo cp copy-icons/copy.desktop /usr/share/applications/

For dark panels

sudo cp copy-icons/copy_dark.svg /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/copy.svg

For light panels

sudo cp copy-icons/copy.svg /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/
